The Sweat Life_Hot Yoga Christchurch_Nutritionist_Kate Lillian Burford_about K8

My name is Kate
and I wear many hats!

Welcome to a little about me - My expertise as a health coach is focussed on movement and changing the body and mind through nutrition and yoga. I have been a Bikram Yoga teacher for over 15 years and my interest in well-being has been driven by my own journey, which much like all of you, has had endless twists and turns leading me deeper into all the things that nourish us into becoming the healthiest versions of ourselves.

Favorite Quote…

“The gut is the queen of the Carstle. If the queen is unhappy she will take down the Kingdom.”

Ritual I need…

I always start my day with movement,
it sets me up for a better day.

What’s important…

Making memories with the people and fur babies you love the most.

Here’s a snapshot!

Since 2008, for over eight phenomenal years I owned and ran Bikram Yoga Christchurch when a personal illness unexpectedly propelled me into making a change and figuring out a new way to keep doing the work I love. With courage and a little intervention from lifelong friends and family I made the choice to let go of one incredible chapter and figure out a new way to continue to share and inspire others with mindful tools geared towards health and wellness while still keeping momentum and growing myself each and every day.

My adult life has always revolved around being a designer, artist, yogini and business owner. After graduating from the School of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Design I worked several years in advertising and as a graphic designer and photographer for magazines, while pursuing freelance design jobs and now luckily being a part of the New Zealand Merino design team today. I have continued study to earn Diplomas in fitness and sports science, completing Bikrams teacher training in 2007 and earning a Diploma in integrative nutrition and health coaching. I have trained with numerous teachers, continually studying, and refining my knowledge of yoga and holistic nutrition and the valuable connection between our bodies, minds, energies and health.

Having been though life-changing loss, and many personal challenges including surgeries and chronic pain I personally understand that life is about trying to find balance, and like most people this is still and will possibly always be my biggest work-in-progress. Beneath it all is my deepest most heartfelt gratitude for my Dad who has loved me and supported me in pursuing my dreams. He built our yoga studios for us to play in and he was always on the mat, loving the community that was bought together.

My daily practice has always challenged me on many levels, and is my all-time companion to balance, my moving meditation. Movement coupled with intention means you’re moving with greater presence; to see, observe and accept what thoughts and feelings rise up from the inside, making your practice one of your greatest teachers to not only improve the physical body, but the mind and heart as well.

I love this quote - “you are allowed to be a masterpiece and a work in progress simultaneously”  that its okay to not always be okay… we can’t predict any outcomes or control much of anything in life but I believe it is important for all of us to find what inspires us most and figure out a way of incorporating it into our daily life.

I have made so many precious dear friends though this work and continue to meet so many wonderful humans… I am honestly so touched by everyone's support and kindness over the years. It means a great deal to me and this community wouldn’t be what it is without you all.

I look forward to working with you personally or having you join me on the mat sometime. ♡ K8

In Loving Memory

It’s hard to believe how time continues and moves forwards when you have lost your best friend in the world. How quickly and permanently our lives can change.

This wonderful man who always encouraged me to go after what I wanted, to look at all options, to dream big and then go bigger, and who always had my back no matter what.
Thank you for building all our special yoga spaces for us to play in... we will always miss you being on the mat with us.

Always and forever in our hearts.
