THE SWEAT LIFE with Kate is a new yoga and fitness studio expressing the powerful connection between body and mind. Kate believes the way we move and nourish ourselves is the mirror for how we live.
Everyone, at some point, is called upon to start a new journey, and after eight phenomenal years of owning and running Bikram Yoga Christchurch, Kate has now opened The Sweat Life, a small boutique space where she can continue to teach breath centered movement, precise alignment and mind-body connection.
Continually studying, and refining, she keeps her students motivated while sharpening their kinesthetic awareness both in and outside of the classroom.

FIRST TIME

1. Hydrate

Drink plenty of water throughout the day before your Bikram yoga class. If you take an early class make sure you are well hydrated the evening before. Drinking a big bottle of water just before class starts will only make you uncomfortable and not amply hydrate you. Small amounts of water frequently is the best way for your body to properly hydrate.

2. Eat

Avoid heavy meals close to class. Arrive with an empty stomach so that during class you will be more comfortable and your body has the energy to focus on the postures rather than digestion.

3. Get There Early

Give yourself 15 minutes before class to settle in. This time can be used to talk about the class, become comfortable in the space and we can chat about any prior injuries and or medical conditions to ensure you get the most out of class.

4. Open Mind

If you’ve practiced other yoga before, know that this will be different. No two experiences are the same. Listen intently to the teacher’s instructions and be open to what can happen.

5. Breaks

It’s your first class so go easy on yourself. Pace yourself so you can stay in the room for the duration of the class.

6. Stay

One of the most important things is being present. That’s what yoga is, being present with your breath and your body. Even if you are not doing a posture and need to sit down, maintaining your focus, and mentally staying with the class you are still practicing yoga.

7. Breathe

Breathe when things get tough. It can be hard to remember in the moment, but if at any point you feel yourself struggling too much in a pose, back off a little and recover your breath.

8. Slow Down

Take your time leaving the room. You’ve just worked every muscle and cell in your body. Respect your hard work. Give yourself ample time to relax and rejuvenate after class. Take it easy; savasana is where the magic happens.

9. Re-hydrate

Drink plenty of water. Have something with electrolytes. Coconut water is great, any kind of electrolyte water is too. If you are a heavy sweater or practicing almost daily you need to replenish all the minerals you sweat out.

10. Enjoy Yourself

Bikram's Method of yoga can be challenging, every challenge brings its own reward. Like all forms of yoga, Bikram's method is not something to be learned and mastered in a day, a month, a year, or 10 years. This practice is rich, deep and amazing and will continue to evolve over your lifetime. You will always feel different for each class you take, and that is what makes it interesting and relevant. Let each class, especially your first be a new adventure, a new experience.
